Orthopedic and Spinal Surgeon

Dr. Darwish graduated MBBCh in 1984 from Cairo University Medical School, Egypt. After obtaining his postgraduate degree in Orthopaedic and trauma surgery (MD) in Egypt, he then obtained the MSc (Surgery of Trauma) from the University of Birmingham, England. In 2004, he was granted the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, by the Specialist Training Authority of the Medical Colleges, UK. Prior to joining Eureka Medical Clinic in September 2006, Dr. Darwish (as a surgeon he is referred to as Mr. Darwish in the UK) worked as consultant orthopedic and spinal surgeon at North Devon District Hospital in the UK.

In addition to general orthopedic and trauma surgery, Dr. Darwish performs spinal surgery and Total Joint Replacement (knees and hips) here in the BVI, at Bougainvillea Clinic. He also provides orthopedic coverage at Peebles Hospital, the local public (Government operated) hospital.

Dr. Darwish treats all forms of bone fractures, using closed (conservative) or open (operative) methods, as appropriate. Whereas prior to the establishment of the specialty of orthopedic (orthopaedic) surgery in the British Virgin Islands, most people with compound or complex bone fractures had to be transferred off-island for treatment , now few, if any, such patients need to go off island for treatment, out of necessity. When such a case arises, it is usually because of other associated injuries/traumas which need transfer.

With the help of MRI and X-ray facilities available at Eureka Medical Clinic, Dr. Darwish has also transformed the care of non-fracture related problems of the spine, bones, joints and muscles, in the British Virgin Islands.

Some of the services commonly provided by Dr. Darwish include:

Arthroscopy and arthroscopic surgery
Under local or sometimes general anesthetics, and through a tiny incision in the affected joint, a slender video-telescope is inserted directly into the joint. By this means the surgeon is able to directly inspect the inside of the joint. Frequently repairs or cleaning of the joint can be done at this time. Arthroscopy and arthroscopic surgery is used most commonly for knee and shoulder joints, allowing surgical repair or excision of the torn or degenerated meniscus, cartilage or ligaments. These procedures are usually performed without need for overnight stay in the hospital.

Repair/correction of deformities in the bone/limb or tendons.
In a coordinate program between Eureka Medical Clinic and Bougainvillea Clinic, Dr. Darwish has established a very successful program of Total Hip Replacement (THR) and Total Knee Replacement (TKR). Typically after surgery the patient is out of bed and walking the following day and can usually be discharged within 2-3 days. This joint replacement program has removed the need for people in the BVI and surrounding islands to travel further to Puerto Rico or to the USA, as it was previously necessary.

Removal or biopsy of skeletal related masses/tumours.

Artificial Joint Replacement for people whose joints have been destroyed by arthritis:

Spinal Surgery:

Dr. Darwish performs a range of spinal treatments, including:
- Laminectomy (usually lumbar laminectomy) for prolapsed intervertebral discs with nerve root compression (cause of severe persistent leg pain, called sciatica)
- Spinal canal decompression for spinal canal stenosis (usually lumbar spine)
- Fixation of the spinal column-for spinal instability
- Corrective surgery for scoliosis

Facet joint injection for relief of back pain, steroid injections (cortisone type) into joints and tendons for relief of pain and, Synvisk injections to help restore worn cartilage / lubricate the joint.
